Selecting Household Water Filters in Emergencies

Household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) devices are an essential intervention within humanitarian emergencies to improve the quality of drinking water and achieve health impact. However, evidence that HWTS products are used correctly and consistently in emergency settings is limited.

FHNW has therefore produced this manual based on their experiences and those of other organisations implementing household water filters in emergency settings. It provides a modular guideline for the field evaluation of household water filters.

This manual is designed for practitioners to apply and evaluate household water filters in the field in resource-limited settings. This includes non-governmental and public implementing organisations distributing filters in emergency contexts and manufacturers developing or optimizing products.

The manual is currently being implemented and validated as part of FHNW's ongoing multi-stage HIF funded project: Evaluating Household Water Filters in Emergency Contexts. Next year they plan to publish an updated manual which will include the results and feedback received during this validation phase, and a short summary of the key points from their field work.
