Governing groups

As a global humanitarian organisation, we work with a wide range of actors, networks, and partners to make sure our work achieves real impact. Our governance structure ensures we act with independence and integrity, and is led by our Board of Trustees.

Our Board of Trustees

Our Board of Trustees has overall responsibility for the organisation; it approves our strategic direction and ensures we're focused on delivering against our ambitious strategy, vision and mission.

Our board is also responsible for making sure we are legally compliant, approving policies and annual plans, and managing organisational risks. Our interim CEO, Fiona McSheehy, reports to the Chair of the Board, Dr. Jane Cocking.

Our board is supported by a number of expert advisory and technical groups, and funding committees.

Programme Advisory Groups

Our Programme Advisory Groups advise our Board of Trustees on the strategic direction of our programmes.

The advisory groups provide us with technical advice and expertise and make recommendations regarding our programme priorities, helping us set the direction and framework for our grant-making.

Programme Funding Committees

Our Programme Funding Committees make independent decisions on the research studies and innovation projects we should fund, and have the authority to make funding decisions up to a pre-agreed amount. Their decision-making follows robust processes, which may vary depending on the size of the grant, but the process is independent and transparent.

The Chairs of our Programme Funding Committees report to their respective Advisory Group.

Technical Working Groups

Our Technical Working Groups (TWG) provide a greater depth of technical expertise in our thematic focus areas. Our Programme Advisory Groups are advised by our Technical Working Groups in specific thematic areas.
