WHAT HUMANITARIAN NEED IS BEING ADDRESSED?

The humanitarian need being addressed is the significant gap in MHM in high severity contexts. In many challenging environments, women and girls face barriers to accessing quality MHM products, impacting their health, dignity, and participation in societal activities. This lack of access is often compounded by cultural taboos and a shortage of suitable, affordable solutions. The project's aim is to address these issues by providing innovative, low-cost, and culturally sensitive MHM products. By doing so, it seeks to improve the overall well-being of women and girls, challenging societal norms and enhancing their ability to fully engage in their communities.

WHAT IS THE INNOVATIVE SOLUTION AND HOW WILL IT IMPROVE EXISTING HUMANITARIAN PRACTICE?

The innovative solution in this project is the introduction of reusable, antibacterial menstrual underwear and washing/drying bags. This approach could represents a improvement over existing humanitarian practices in MHM. Traditionally, MHM solutions in humanitarian settings have been limited, often disposable, and not environmentally sustainable. By offering a reusable, low-cost, and culturally sensitive alternative, this solution addresses not only the practical aspects of menstrual hygiene but also respects the environmental and socio-cultural dimensions of the communities it serves. The impact is multifaceted, enhancing health, dignity, and environmental sustainability, while setting a new standard for MHM in humanitarian contexts.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The expected outcomes of project include a comprehensive evaluation of their effectiveness, usability, and acceptance in high severity contexts. This will involve gathering feedback from users, assessing the products' durability, and monitoring their impact on health and hygiene practices. Additionally, the project aims to produce educational materials and guidelines to support the implementation of these solutions, thereby enhancing the understanding and management of menstrual hygiene in challenging environments. The ultimate goal is to establish a model for sustainable and culturally appropriate MHM solutions that can be replicated and scaled in similar contexts.
