Fiona Shanahan
Senior Humanitarian Protection Advisor, Trócaire
Dr. Fiona Shanahan is a psychologist with 17 years’ experience focused on the protection and psychosocial wellbeing of women and girls in humanitarian settings and protracted conflict. Fiona works with Trócaire providing technical support to specialized GBV and protection programming delivered in partnership with local humanitarian organisations, particularly women-led and women’s rights organisations, in humanitarian country programmes globally. Fiona represents Trócaire as a core member of the GBV AoR and Call to Action and is part of initiatives at the global level to support the leadership of Women Led Organisations and Women’s Rights Organisations in coordination, develop locally led M&E processes to measure achievement of the Inter-Agency Minimum Standards for GBV in Emergencies Programming, and develop consensus-based guidance on providing survivor centred MHPSS services to GBV survivors in humanitarian settings. Prior to taking up this role in 2016, she spent ten years working on protection, MHPSS and GBV response programming with community based, survivor-led organizations, OHCHR, government, and in academia. Her PhD and post-doctoral research focused on psychosocial resilience in the post-conflict reintegration processes of formerly associated young women and their children born or conceived within the Lord’s Resistance Army in Northern Uganda and psychosocial interventions in the context of the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone.
