Join us for a new In Focus series, to discuss the findings and recommendations of a new rapid review, published by Humanitarian Outcomes, In Focus: The role of the humanitarian sector in navigating ethical decisions in Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, the international aid sector faces a wrenching decision: uphold universal human rights values by refusing to comply with the Taliban's edicts against employing women or prioritise the humanitarian imperative to continue providing what aid they can to those who need it most.

The decision to stay is further complicated by the reality that effective in-person aid programming requires female staff to most effectively reach women and girls.

The question is, how can the international aid sector navigate the complex issues faced since the Taliban’s return to power? The review looks at this, about the current ability of the sector for ethical decision-making, while drawing on the views Afghan women about the challenging decisions the sector is making.

Join our virtual discussion to hear an analysis of the current ethical dilemmas for action in Afghanistan and for insights into how actors can navigate these.

Working with the Organization for Sustainable Development and Research (OSDR) in Kabul, the review is the fourth in a series of rapid reviews conducted by Humanitarian Outcomes under the Humanitarian Rapid Research Initiative (HRRI), commissioned and supported by the UK Humanitarian Innovation Hub with UK aid from the Foreign, Commonwealth &; Development Office.
